Lead-Based Paint
As one of the major sources of lead poisoning, lead-based paint is a cause of concern, especially in older homes with children. If not detected early, high levels of lead in the body can be very harmful. Children are particularly vulnerable to it's effects – lead has been shown to cause behavioral problems, slowed growth, headaches and even permanent brain, nerve and kidney damage. Adults can develop high blood pressure, digestive problems, nerve disorders, memory and concentration problems and muscle and joint pain from lead poisoning.
Lead-based paint that is in good condition is usually not a hazard. Peeling, chipping, chalking, or cracking lead-based paint, however, poses a serious threat, particularly to babies and young children who like to put their hands and other objects in their mouths. Inhaling lead dust, which you can't necessarily see, is another way you can be dangerously exposed to lead poisoning.
